Rheinaue north of Karlsruhe is a landscape protection area in the district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg .

Location and description

The approximately 1,885 hectare landscape protection area was created by collective ordinance of the Karlsruhe district office of October 15, 1962 for the protection of parts of the landscape in the Karlsruhe district .

The protected area is north of the urban area of ​​Karlsruhe, directly along the Rhine between Eggenstein and the Dettenheim district of Rußheim . It belongs to the natural areas 222- Northern Upper Rhine Lowlands and 223- Hardtebenen within the natural spatial main unit 22- Northern Upper Rhine Lowland . The area lies entirely in the EU bird sanctuary no. 6816-401 Rhine lowland Karlsruhe-Rheinsheim and for the most part in FFH area no. 6816-341 Rhine lowland from Karlsruhe to Philippsburg .

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose is to protect the near-natural floodplain and wet forests with large-scale remnants of a floodplain relief (meander arches, former courses of the Rhine with low moor formation, bank walls, gullies, oxbow lakes, gravel ridges of different ages of the Rhine systems) and significant occurrences of river valley species and aquatic plants ( Trapa natans , Salvinia natans ) and rare types of extensive grassland. The area is of great importance for endangered animal species.
