Joseph Carl Bernard

Joseph Carl Bernard (born January 26, 1780 in Horatitz near Schiesselitz , Böhmen , † March 31, 1850 in Vienna) was an Austrian journalist, writer and librettist .

Life

Bernard was born in Horatitz in 1780 as the son of the farmer Anton Bernard and his wife Maria Elisabetha Marz. After completing his studies, he mainly worked as a journalist, for example as an editor of periodicals relating to the theater, such as Friedensblätter. A magazine for life, literature and art as well as Thalia. an evening paper dedicated to the friends of the dramatic muse . From 1817 he was editor-in-chief of the Wiener Zeitung for a period of thirty years .

He also became known for his libretti to Louis Spohr's opera Faust (Prague 1816) and Conradin Kreutzer's Libussa (Vienna 1822). His libretto for the oratorio The Victory of the Cross was intended for Beethoven , but was not set to music by Beethoven .
