Joseph Damer, 1st Earl of Dorchester

Joseph Damer, 1st Earl of Dorchester (March 12, 1718 - January 12, 1798 ) was a British nobleman and politician .

He was the eldest son and heir of Joseph Damer (1676-1737) from his marriage to Mary Churchill. His father was a wealthy landowner and from 1722 to 1727 MP for Dorchester in the British House of Commons .

He studied at Trinity College Dublin from 1734 to 1735 and in 1737 inherited his father's lands in Dorset, England, and County Tipperary, Ireland . He was soon elected as a Member of the House of Commons, from 1741 and 1747 as Burgess for Weymouth , from 1747 to 1754 for Bramber and from 1754 to 1762 for Dorchester. In Parliament he belonged to the Whigs' party . At times he held the post of Dorchester High Steward .

In 1753 he was appointed to the Privy Council for Ireland , was raised on June 3, 1753 in the Peerage of Ireland to Baron Milton , of Shronehill in the County of Tipperary , and thus received a seat in the Irish House of Lord . On May 10, 1762 he was raised in the Peerage of Great Britain to Baron Milton , of Milton Abbey in the County of Dorset, and thereby resigned from the British House of Commons and received a seat in the British House of Lords . On May 18, 1792, he was also awarded the title Earl of Dorchester and Viscount Milton , of Milton Abbey in the County of Dorset in the Peerage of Great Britain .

In 1742 he married Lady Caroline Sackville, daughter of Lionel Sackville, 1st Duke of Dorset . With her he had four children, including his heir George Damer, 2nd Earl of Dorchester (1746-1808).
