Joseph Ernst Tunner , nickname Joseph, (born September 24, 1792 in Obergraden near Köflach , Styria , † October 10, 1877 in Graz ) was an Austrian history and portrait painter and belongs to the Nazarenes .

Life

Joseph Tunner studied at the Vienna Academy . From 1821 to 1823 he was in Istria , then in Rome until 1831, where he joined Friedrich Overbeck and the brothers in Luke. He put his art entirely in the service of the Catholic Church and created several altarpieces for Styrian churches. From 1840 he was director of the drawing academy and picture gallery in Graz.

His second marriage was Maria Tunner (1814–1901), the daughter of his brother Peter Tunner (1786–1844), their daughters were the pianist Marie Tunner (1844–1870) and the painter Sylvia Tunner (1851–1907) .
