Joseph Franz von Spengel

Joseph Franz von Spengel (born February 7, 1784 in Munich ; † January 26, 1851 there ) was a royal Bavarian officer, most recently in the rank of major general . From 1810 he was a bearer of the Military Max Joseph Order .

Life

Joseph Franz Ritter von Spengel was the son of Johann Georg Spengel and his wife Marie, a born Berüff. His father was in the service of the Bavarian elector as court music and chief stables secretary . On November 16, 1801, Joseph Franz joined the artillery regiment as 3rd class gunner and was promoted to corporal on July 11, 1802 .

On June 29, 1805 appointed Junker in the 4th Chevaulegers Regiment Bubenhofen, Spengel took part in the 1805 campaign against Austria with this unit . On November 20, 1805, he was promoted to lieutenant . In the battle near Stecken (December 5, 1805) he and some Chevaulegers were able to throw back Austrian Uhlans who were harassing a Bavarian battery . As a sub-lieutenant he fought in the campaigns from 1806 to 1807 against Russia and Prussia and in 1809 against Austria during the Fifth Coalition War . On April 16, 1809, when Deroy's division withdrew from Landshut to Altdorf, General Karl Friedrich August von Seydewitz mentioned Spengel by name for his services. In the following battle near Eggmühl (April 22, 1809) Spengel was able to distinguish himself again. When the attack against the Austrian positions on the heights of Schierling and Eggmühl began, Spengel was in the first meeting with his association. In an attack against a battery with 16 guns, which was forced to retreat, Spengel managed to capture several cannons and capture the crew.

With a license from May 31, 1809 and an army order from June 8, 1809, Spengel received the order of the French Legion of Honor and was promoted to first lieutenant on November 21, 1809 . A chapter of the Military Max Joseph Order held in Schwaz on December 29, 1809, chaired by Major General Karl von Vincenti , unanimously voted for Spengel to join the order. With an army order of October 22, 1810, he was named a Knight of the Military Max Joseph Order for his services in the Battle of Eggmühl on April 22, 1809. Admission to the order was also associated with an elevation to the personal nobility in the Kingdom of Bavaria.

On February 23, 1812 he was appointed adjutant to General Seydewitz. In the Russian campaign of 1812 he received a serious arm wound during the battle of Dolguia (July 25, 1812). Promoted to Rittmeister on March 6, 1813 , he led a squadron in the campaigns of 1813 and 1814 against France, was transferred to the Garde du Corps regiment on February 22, 1815 and promoted to major on April 30, 1818 . After the establishment of the 1st Cuirassier Regiment in November 1825, Spengel was transferred to this unit. On May 1, 1830 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment . In October 1832 Spengel took over the department of army dismantling and foal farms in the War Ministry . On May 31, 1840 he was appointed head of the administration of the military foal farms and at the same time promoted to colonel . Spengel received the Cross of Honor of the Order of Ludwig with the very highest signature of November 5, 1844 and was characterized as major general on April 7, 1847 .

Joseph Franz Ritter von Spengel died on January 26, 1851, at the age of 66, in Munich, the city of his birth.
