Joseph Fratrel
Joseph Fratrel d. Ä. (* 1727 in Épinal , France; † May 15, 1783 in Mannheim ) was a French painter, etcher and engraver .
life and work
Joseph Fratrel, born in Epinal in 1727 (some sources say 1730), studied law and became a parliamentary advocate in the Duchy of Lorraine . Since he stammered heavily , he was unsuitable for this job and had to give it up.
He had already been introduced to miniature painting by a monk and was now learning this professionally from Pierre-Antoine Baudouin (1723–1769) in Paris.
Stanislaus I. Leszczyński , Duke of Lorraine, hired Fratrel as court painter in his residence, Castle Lunéville . After his death in 1766, he moved to the Palatinate court in Mannheim, where Elector Karl Theodor appointed him professor at the local art academy . There he also began to paint in a new type of oil and wax mixture, based on an encaustic process developed by the Mannheim-based Baron Charles von Taubenheim.
Fratrel also received further training from the renowned copper engraver Egid Verhelst in Mannheim . He then created one of his most famous works, the etching Apotheosis by Elector Carl Theodor , 1777 [s. Daubicourt II, p. 196, No. 11 I (v. II)].
Fratrel died as a court painter in Mannheim in 1783 and is considered one of the well-known artists at the Palatinate court. The city of Mannheim named a street after him.
