Joseph sweeping
Joseph Kehren (born May 30, 1817 in Hülchrath , Grevenbroich district , † May 12, 1880 in Düsseldorf ) was a German history painter and fresco artist of the Düsseldorf School .
Life
Kehren was enrolled at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1834 to 1864 . From 1837 he studied in the first class and from 1844 in the master class of Wilhelm Schadow . He was also taught by Josef Wintergerst , Karl Ferdinand Sohn , Theodor Hildebrandt and Rudolf Wiegmann . In 1839 he exhibited his first painting, The Holy Agnes (altarpiece in a castle chapel of Count Trips). He also painted a considerable number of church flags and supported artist friends with the execution of frescoes , especially Alfred Rethel with the frescoes from the history of Charlemagne (in the town hall in Aachen ).
When Rethel fell into an incurable disease, Kehren was commissioned to complete the work. Based on Rethel's designs, he painted:
- The baptism of Wittekind ( Widukind )
- The imperial coronation of Charlemagne by Leo III. ,
- The construction of the Aachen Cathedral
- The appointment of Louis the Pious as Charles' successor .
After finishing those frescos (1862) he returned to Düsseldorf and painted the picture Justitia on behalf of the Prussian Ministry of Culture , based on a small oil painting by Rethel for the jury court in Marienwerder . In the fire of the Düsseldorf academy building on March 19, 1872, Kehren's studio with all his studies and several pictures that had been started perished. In 1874 he was commissioned by the Prussian government to work with the history painter Franz Heinrich Commans and Johann Peter Theodor Janssen to decorate the aula of the teachers' college in Moers with frescoes depicting the whole story from the creation of the world to the coronation of Wilhelm I in a large frieze . at Versailles. Kehren's view was serious, full of strength, spirit and life. In the pursuit of sharp characteristics, his style took on a certain severity. He died on May 12, 1880 in Düsseldorf.
