Joseph Kreutzer (born November 11, 1790 in Aachen , † June 16, 1840 in Düsseldorf ) was a German composer , violinist , conductor and guitarist .

Life

Little is known about the life of Joseph Kreutzer. According to his death certificate, he was born in Aachen as the son of the local music teacher Paul Kreutzer. From around 1805 he lived in Düsseldorf and, alongside August Burgmüller, played an important role in the city's musical life. In several sources he is referred to as the concertmaster of the theater orchestra. Presumably he was also the violin teacher of Burgmüller's son Norbert Burgmüller . Several works by Kreutzer were performed in Düsseldorf, for example a flute concerto (now lost) on March 5, 1822, played by his cousin Bernhard Kreutzer.

Joseph Kreutzer was also instrumental in the concert that Norbert Burgmüller gave on April 9, 1831 in Düsseldorf after his return from Kassel .

When Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was the city's music director in Düsseldorf from 1833 to 1835, Kreutzer is said to have raised the mood against Mendelssohn on various occasions. This is reported in particular by the officer Emil von Webern, who is a friend of Mendelssohn .

Occasionally Kreutzer also appeared together with Mendelssohn, for example on July 17, 1834 in a concert given by the singer Josephine Michaelsi under the direction of Mendelssohn. The second item on the program read: “Great soprano aria with violin concertante, from the opera Griselda von Paer , performed by Joseph Kreutzer and the concert host.” In the same concert, Norbert Burgmüller's Duo for Clarinet and Piano Op. 15 was premiered.

In the last years of his life Kreutzer was seriously ill, so that his cousin Friedrich Kreutzer gave a concert on April 19, 1838, the proceeds of which were intended for his recovery.

Kreutzer is of lasting interest mainly because of his delightful works for guitar, although they are largely rooted in tradition. Several are now available in new editions or on CD. Larger works, including a symphony , did not appear in print and are now lost.
