Joseph Kuipers

Joseph Kuipers (* 1984 in Rochester / Minnesota ) is an American cellist .

Kuipers studied cello with Paul Katz and composition with Pozzi Escot at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston . He then went to Europe for six years and received the artist diploma as a student of Michael Flaksman at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim and the master's degree as a student of Thomas Demenga at the Music Academy of the City of Basel . With musicians such as Sergio Azzolini , Rudolf Buchbinder , Ernst Kovacic , Geoff Nuttal , Felix Renggli and Ragna Schirmer , he has appeared at the Ravinia Music Festival , the Aspen Music Festival , the Ascoli Piceno Festival , the Carl Orff Festival and at the World Cello Congress III . His interest in contemporary music led to collaborations with Robert Cogan , Heinz Holliger , Helmut Lachenmann and Arvo Pärt and ensembles such as the Ensemble für Neue Musik Basel , the Neue Musik Ensemble Mannheim , the Second Instrumental Unit , New York and the Callithumpian Consort of Boston .

In 2010 he founded the Marinus Project , an international ensemble of chamber musicians, of which he is artistic director with his sister Rachel and is the ensemble in residence at Washington and Lee University and Eastern University . After teaching experience at the Carl Orff Festival and as assistant to Michael Flaksman, Kuipers runs a private cello studio in Dallas and teaches at Eastern University .
