Joseph Obanyi Sagwe (born March 13, 1967 in Nyakemicha , Kenya ) is Roman Catholic Bishop of Kakamega .

Life

Joseph Sagwe Obanyi was born on March 13, 1967 in the village of Nyakemicha near Nyamira in Kenya . He belongs to the Kisii people . He attended elementary school in Kebiringo from 1975 to 1981. From 1983 to 1986 he was admitted to St. John's Minor Seminary in Rakwaro (Migori), from which he graduated with the O-Level (Ordinary-Level; about secondary school leaving certificate). He achieved the A-Level (Advanced-Level; Abitur) in the "Mother of Apostles Seminary" in Eldoret (Uasin Gishu). He studied philosophy at St. Augustine Major Seminary in Mabanga and theology in Nairobi at St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary. In 1995 he was ordained a deacon.

On October 25, 1996, Obanyi received the sacrament of ordination . He initially worked as a parish vicar and pastoral advisor for the diocese of Kisii . From 1999 to 2004, his bishop Joseph Mairura Okemwa sent him to Rome to study at the Pontifical Lateran University , where he received his master's degree and his doctorate in canon law . After his return from Rome he was appointed pastor at the cathedral of Kisii and immediately thereafter, in personal union, vicar general of the diocese.

On December 5, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Kakamega. The bishop emeritus of Kakamega, Philip Sulumeti , donated him episcopal ordination on March 7, 2015 ; Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Kenya Archbishop Charles Daniel Balvo, the Bishops of Kisumu , Zacchaeus Okoth , and of Kisii, Joseph Mairura Okemwa and the Cardinal of Nairobi John Njue. 25 bishops, priests, nuns, numerous politicians such as Vice President William Ruto and over 20,000 believers welcomed the new bishop.
