Joseph Preindl

Joseph Preindl (born January 30, 1756 in Marbach an der Donau , Lower Austria , † October 26, 1823 in Vienna ) was an Austrian organist and composer .

Preindl's father was an organist in Marbach. He was first a choirboy in Mariazell with Franz Xaver Widerhofer before he came to Vienna as an organist at the age of 16 and was taught by Johann Georg Albrechtsberger . In 1773 he became a teacher at the orphanage, in 1775 organist in the Church of Maria am Gestade and with the Carmelites. In 1793 he was organist at the Peterskirche in Vienna, in 1797 at the Michaelerkirche . In addition, in 1795 he became Albrechtsberger's adjunct at St. Stephen's Church , whom he succeeded as cathedral music director in 1809. He also worked as a singing and piano teacher.

As a composer, Preindl created above all high-quality church music, such as masses, requies, motets and church arias. He also left a clay school .

After his death, Preindl was buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof . In 1894 the Preindlgasse in Vienna- Hietzing was named after him.
