After graduating from Vestavia Hills High School in Jefferson County , Alabama , Hancock was selected in the fourth round of the 1996 amateur selection with the Milwaukee Brewers , but he did not sign. Instead, he graduated from college at Auburn University in Alabama, where he was offered a more attractive scholarship. In 1998 he was selected in the fifth round of the Boston Red Sox amateur selection and accepted the contract. He made his debut in the Major League on September 10, 2002.

In December 2002 he was exchanged for Jeremy Giambi at the Philadelphia Phillies . On July 30, 2004, he was traded with Andy Machado to the Cincinnati Reds for Rodd Jones and Brad Correll. The next day, Hancock was the winning pitcher for the Reds in a game against the Houston Astros . The game started the day before Hancock's move.

On the first day of spring 2006 training, Hancock was fired from the Reds for 7.65kg overweight for violating a clause in his contract. He immediately signed a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and had his best season with an ERA of 4:09.

Hancock died on April 29, 2007 in a traffic accident. The Cardinals' scheduled game against the Chicago Cubs that evening was canceled due to the accident.
