Joshua Aaron Fishman ( Yiddish שיקל פֿישמאַן Schikl Fischman; * July 18, 1926 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ; † March 1, 2015 in New York City , New York ) was an American linguist specializing in the sociology of language , language planning, and bilingual teaching .

Life

Fishman grew up in Philadelphia, where he studied Yiddish at a school in the Arbeter-Ring . From 1944 to 1948 he studied history and psychology at the University of Pennsylvania . He then studied Yiddish with Max Weinreich . In 1951 he was employed by the Jewish Education Committee of New York and married Gella Schweid. Two years later he completed his PhD in social psychology at Columbia University in New York City. The title of the work was Negative Stereotypes Concerning Americans among American-born Children Receiving Various Types of Minority-group Education .

He first taught social psychology at the City College of New York . In 1958 he became professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Fishman later received a position as professor of psychology and sociology at Yeshiva University in New York, where he also served as dean of the Ferkauf Graduate School of Social Sciences and Humanities and as academic vice president; In 1966 he became "Distinguished University Research Professor of Social Sciences".

After his retirement in 1988, he became involved in several other institutions. He was “Visiting Professor” and “Visiting Scholar” at the School of Education, Applied Linguistics and Department of Linguistics, Stanford University , “Adjunct Professor of Multilingual and Multicultural Education” at the School of Education, New York University , and “Visiting Professor of Linguistics “at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York . She also taught at over a dozen other universities, including the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, CA , and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ.

Fishman wrote over 1,000 journal articles and monographs. He was also editor of the Contributions to the Sociology of Language and developed 1991 Graded Intergenerational Disruption Scale (GIDS) to the level of danger endangered languages assess (see also: EGIDS ) .
