Sir Joshua Abraham Hassan

Sir Joshua Abraham Hassan , GBE , KCMG , LVO , QC (born August 21, 1915 in Gibraltar , † July 1, 1997 ibid), nicknamed Salvador , was a Gibraltar politician. He was first mayor (1955-1969, actually since 1945) and first chief minister of Gibraltar .

Over the course of five terms (1964–1969 and 1972–1987), he held the office of Chief Minister for 20 years . He was a committed civil rights activist, advisor to the British Queen and was primarily responsible for the development of independent administrative structures.

He came from an old Sephardic family who originally lived in Morocco and Menorca .

Joshua Hassan was married twice. From the marriages had four daughters.

His nephew, Solomon Levy, was Mayor of Gibraltar from 2008 to 2009.
