The Journal of the Optical Society of America is a scientific journal with peer review in the subject area optics , which since 1917 by the Optical Society (OSA, formerly Optical Society of America is) published. Since 1984 it has been divided into two sub-journals.

1917 to 1983: JOSA

From 1917 to 1983 the journal appeared as the Journal of the Optical Society of America (short name according to ISO 4 : J. Opt. Soc. Am. , Often also abbreviated as JOSA, ISSN  0030-3941 ). In 1917 five editions appeared. After none at all and only two issues in 1919, the journal appeared bimonthly in 1920 and 1921. In 1922 10 issues appeared (on the first of every month with the exception of February and April). From 1923 the magazine appeared monthly.

Since 1984: JOSA A and JOSA B

After the last issue in 1983, JOSA was divided into two magazines:

The Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A, ISO 4 : J. Opt. Soc. Am. A , ISSN of the print version 1084-7529, 1520-8532 for the online version) deals with classical optics, visual perception , color , atmospheric optics , coherence and statistical optics, diffraction , scattering , polarization , thin layers , image processing and machine vision . Scientific editor is P. Scott Carney from the University of Rochester ( USA ), his deputy is Christine Fernandez-Maloigne from the University of Poitiers ( France ).

The Journal of the Optical Society of America B (JOSA B, ISO 4 : J. Opt. Soc. Am. B , ISSN Print 0740-3224, ISSN online version 1520-8540) sees itself as a general optics journal with a sister journal JOSA A complementary selection of topics that focuses on research into the basic research of the interactions between light and matter, in particular quantum optics , nonlinear optics , laser physics , the optics of matter waves , optical waveguides , metamaterials , photonic crystals , photorefractive materials , holography , spectroscopy and ultrafast spectroscopy and the optics of terahertz radiation . Its scientific editor is Kurt Busch from the Humboldt University of Berlin ( Germany ), the deputy editor is Igor I. Smolyaninov from the University of Maryland, College Park ( USA ).

The impact factor of JOSA A for 2018 is 1.861, that of JOSA B 2.284. In the statistics of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) , the two journals take 52nd and 43rd place respectively out of 95 journals in the field of optics. The ranking has deteriorated significantly since the turn of the millennium; for the year 2000 they were 12th and 7th among the 57 titles at the time.
