Juan Ignacio "Pepe" Sánchez Brown (born May 8, 1977 in Bahía Blanca , Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine basketball player. The 1.93 m tall point guard was together with Rubén Wolkowyski the first Argentine in the NBA and was 2004 Olympic champion with the national team.
Career
After Sánchez had been active for two years in Argentina for Deportivo Roca and Estudiantes de Bahía Blanca, he moved to the NCAA in 1996 for the Temple University team . He then became the first Argentine to sign a contract with the NBA, but he was rarely used with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Atlanta Hawks . Therefore, Sánchez was active in the following season for Panathinaikos Athens , where he won the Euroleague . He then tried it one more time in the NBA, but he came in the 2002/03 season to a total of only nine appearances for the Detroit Pistons , the Golden State Warriors used him not once in the league. Sánchez returned to Europe and has been active in Spain since 2003. After a year at Etosa Alicante , he signed with Unicaja Málaga , where he stayed for three years and won the Spanish Cup in 2005 and the championship the following year. Sánchez then moved to FC Barcelona and, after one season, to Real Madrid . Eventually he returned to Argentina, where he played briefly for Obras Sanitarias and again for Estudiantes de Bahía Blanca until 2013.
With the Argentine national team , Sánchez reached the final of the 2002 World Cup and the semifinals of the 2006 World Cup . He celebrated his greatest success with the 2004 Olympic gold medal , but he was no longer available for the 2008 Games .
