At the turn of the 20th century there was a lack of church buildings in the church province of East Prussia of the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union . 14 newly founded parishes had no church of their own, and there was no prospect of an early construction. There were 26 rural communities in East Prussia with more than 5,000 parishioners (including one over 14,000), and 46 parishes each comprised more than 50 places, including the rural community Memel with almost 100 villages. The ways to the church were sometimes over 15 kilometers. A total of 40 churches would have been built. There was a lack of funds everywhere.

In order to provide an effective remedy, the idea arose in the church province of East Prussia to hold the anniversary celebrations on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the coronation of Frederick III. of Brandenburg in Königsberg in 1901 not to celebrate with lavish festive events, but to create a permanent memorial by building churches in East Prussia. A capital of 100,000 marks should form the basis, generous donors topped it up. In May 1901, a call was made to the clergy in the province to raise funds for the construction of ten anniversary churches so that they could start building them in the anniversary year.

At the end of the campaign on September 8, 1901, the surprisingly high amount of 228,000 marks resulted. This enabled the committee to build 12 churches and 2 chapels, six of them in parishes that had already been established. At the same time, with the construction of four more churches, new parishes could be set up, and two more churches were built, which later became independent parishes. Two chapels were also built. On December 23, 1912, the empress received the final report after the 14th anniversary church had been completed.
