Judgment is the fifth studio album by the British band Anathema . It was released on June 21, 1999 on Music for Nations .
Origin and style
After main songwriter Duncan Patterson left the band, the composing was taken over by guitarist Danny Cavanagh , but the other band members also contributed pieces for judgment , such as drummer John Douglas Don't Look Too Far . After the album, Martin Powell, who had already taken over the live keyboards since the Alternative 4 tour , left the band and was replaced by Les Smith from Cradle of Filth . Judgment is dedicated to the mother of the Cavanagh brothers, Helen Cavanagh, who died in 1998. In this context there is also the piece One Last Goodbye , which is also performed live as a duet with a singer. There are two pieces of female vocals on the album, Parisienne Moonlight and Don't Look Too Far . He was taken over by Lee Douglas.
reception
The album reached number 69 in the German charts. Jason Hundey from the Allmusic website gave it four out of five stars. He wrote that the album was a "really dazzling masterpiece" that pierced the senses with its intensity. Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann described Judgment in Rock Hard magazine as "a gripping, emotional rollercoaster ride, the lyrical processing of hard strokes of fate that the musicians had to put up with ...". The album is a “statement” that “pop appeal and catchiness don't have to be penetrative and slick.” He awarded 9.5 out of ten points.
