Serenades is the debut album by the British band Anathema . It was released on Peaceville Records in February 1993 .

Origin and style

The album was recorded with producer and Peaceville founder "Hammy" Halmshaw and sound engineer Mags at the Academy Studios in Yorkshire . The album is still heavily influenced by Death Doom , but J'ai Fait Une Promesse already had the female vocals typical of Gothic Metal , heard here by Ruth Wilson. They (Will Always) Die was already released as They Die on the previous EP The Crestfallen . The album ends with the 22-minute keyboard sound collage Dreaming: The Romance . J'ai Fait Une Promesse and Sleep in Sanity were completely rearranged and released on Falling Deeper in 2011 .

reception

Götz Kühnemund wrote in Rock Hard magazine that Anathema came from Death Metal , but that “no musical restrictions were imposed” on them. He also heard influences from Cathedral , My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost , such as acoustic guitars and guest singer. "Sure, all of that has already happened in the aforementioned bands, and Anathema are not exactly original - but the bottom line is the quality of the songs, and in the case of Serenade they are worth a good seven points."
