The Silent Enigma is the second studio album by the British band Anathema . It was released on Peaceville Records in October 1995 .

Origin and style

The self-produced album was recorded in Newcastle , just to … Alone , additional recordings took place in Liverpool . It was mixed by Mags at The Academy studio in Dewsbury . Singer Darren White left the band while recording The Silent Enigma . Guitarist Vincent Cavanagh took over the vocals, which compared to Growling Whites was designed as a hoarse shouting . The songwriting on the album was refined compared to the first album and stood out from genre colleagues such as Paradise Lost . The songs are mostly slow, but sometimes there are fast death metal passages. ... Alone , on the other hand, contains acoustic guitars and string instruments as well as female vocals, the latter one of the typical elements of Gothic Metal . Rebecca Wilson sang this one. In Shroud of Frost a place spoken word -part, which was acquired by Deryk Fullwood.

reception

In Rock Hard magazine , Michael Rensen wrote that the band had "audibly developed", Cavanagh was replacing White "very efficiently despite limited vocal possibilities".
