Pentecost III is the second EP by the British band Anathema . It was released on Peaceville Records in 1995 .

Creation and publication

After the debut album Serenades and a European tour with Cradle of Filth , My Dying Bride and Pyogenesis , Anathema recorded another EP in West Yorkshire in May 1994 , which, with a playing time of over 40 minutes, should reach almost album length. A painting by Frederic Leighton was used for the cover . The release of the EP was delayed until May 1995, when the band was already working on The Silent Enigma without Darren White . Pentecost III was re-released in 2001 together with the first EP The Crestfallen and was also released as an LP in 2012.

style

On their third release, Anathema are still rooted in Death Doom , but also show similarities to Gothic Metal, which was developing during this period . There are slow, atmospheric passages with elegiac guitars and rather clear vocals, but also faster, aggressive passages with hard riffs and guttural vocals . The mood is melancholy and gloomy.

reception

“PENTECOST III [...] hardly represents a step forward compared to last year's album SERENADES, rather the opposite [...]; everything is black, but the glow of melancholy, the last remnant of warm emotionality, is largely missing. Not exactly disappointing, but I expected more. "

- Robert Müller : Metal hammer

“ANATHEMA are consistently continuing their proven line on their third output, but they do not miss the necessary further development. In the vocal area in particular, the British were able to make significant gains [...]. [F] he friends of permanently sad Doom Metal sounds are sure to be a hit . "

- Michael Rensen : Rock Hard
