Eternity is the third studio album by the British band Anathema . It was released on Peaceville Records in November 1996 . It continued the change after The Silent Enigma and was the first with clear vocals.

Origin and style

With Eternity, Anathema took their style further. Vincent Cavanagh now sang clearly in contrast to the previous album. Former singer Darren White, who growled death-metal- like , left the band while recording The Silent Enigma . Cavanagh's vocals were still in the shouting style on that album . The texts also changed, for example from accusations against God towards statements about the futility of life. In addition, keyboards were added, the hard guitars gave way to these in part, although in parts they are still in the foreground. With Hope was a piece of Roy Harper's album Whatever Happened to Jugula? covered. Harper also recited the spoken poem Bad Speech from the same album as an intro to Hope . Michelle Richfield took over the female singing voice on the album.

reception

Robert Taylor awarded four and a half out of five stars and the AMG Album Pick award on the Allmusic website . He wrote that Anathema had proven with the album that they were an independent band and not satisfied with repeating history. Hanno Kress wrote in Rock Hard magazine that the album was “heavy, pompous and bombastic”, and that “sound glue” was reprimanded. Nevertheless, the conclusion was: “ Eternity is beguiling and apocalyptic in its own way. The ideal post-metallic chill-out after a night of dancing. ”The rating was 7.5 out of ten points.
