A Fine Day to Exit is the sixth studio album by the British band Anathema . It was released on October 9, 2001 on Music for Nations .

Origin and style

A Fine Day to Exit , recorded with Nick Griffiths ( Pink Floyd , Mansun , Cast ) in Liverpool and Lincolnshire and mixed by Colin Richardson , is an album that can no longer be connected to the band's metal past. Instead, mostly calm, melodic and atmospheric pieces dominate, only rarely, as with Panic , interrupted by a higher tempo. Influences were seen in British bands like Radiohead , Pink Floyd and the Beatles . The last piece of Temporary Peace ends after six minutes with the sound of waves rolling onto a beach. After another two minutes, steps can be heard, a monologue begins by a person who apparently speaks softly to himself. Another voice can also be heard. This is followed by a three minute long hidden track at the Country style, which is not titled on the album.

reception

The album reached number 95 in Germany. Alex Henderson of Allmusic wrote that the band has not lost its “fascination for the dark side”. The album is not what headbangers dreamed of, but a "satisfactory chapter in the history of Anathema". It awarded three out of five stars. Breda Maßmann wrote in Rock Hard magazine that Anathemas “tightly woven soundscapes” seemed “even more fragile than on the previous Judgment ”. The band have "refined their style in great detail and increased the intensity." They awarded 8.5 out of ten points.

layout

The cover, which, according to the Travis Smith booklet, was designed according to a concept by Les Smith, Vincent Cavanagh and “a glass of Guinness ”, shows the image of a beach and the sea from the windshield of a car window. One person's shoes and clothes are scattered across the beach. In front of the speedometer of the car is a picture of a family of three, man, woman, son. There is a sticky note with the album title on the dashboard. "Missed call" is displayed on the cell phone, which is on the dashboard next to a pistol, tablets and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s . A person's pair of eyes can be seen in the rearview mirror. The back cover shows a car from inside perspective on a dark country road. The shadow of a child appears in the spotlight. The lyrics in the booklet are reproduced in a collage in scribbled letters. Only a message dated July 3, 2001, “Hey man, where the fuck are you?” Can be read in typewriter.
