The doubtful cotoneaster ( Cotoneaster ambiguus ) is a white flowering shrub belonging to the pome fruit family (Pyrinae). The natural range of the species is in western China. It is sometimes used as an ornamental plant.

description

The doubtful cotoneaster is a deciduous shrub up to 2 meters high with reddish-brown or gray-brown, thin, initially striggy-haired and later balding branches. The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The stem is 2 to 5 millimeters long and finely haired. The stipules are lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, finely hairy and usually fall off early. The leaf blade is simple, oval-ovate to rhombic-ovate, 2.5 to 6 inches long and 1.5 to 3 inches wide, with a pointed or pointed tip and a broad wedge-shaped base. The upper side of the leaf is finely hairy and balding early, the underside is initially fluffy and later also balding.

The inflorescences are 1.5 to 3.5 centimeters in diameter panicles of five to ten flowers with a finely haired spindle. The bracts are lanceolate or linear, 2 to 3 millimeters long, finely hairy and fall off early. The flower stalks are finely hairy and 4 to 6 millimeters long. The flowers are 7 to 8 millimeters in diameter. The flower cup is initially finely hairy on the outside and later bald. The sepals are triangular, pointed and 1 to 1.5 millimeters long and 2 to 2.5 millimeters wide. The petals stand upright. They are white with pink spots, broadly egg-shaped or rounded, 3 to 4 millimeters long and almost as wide, with a blunt tip and a somewhat nailed base. The approximately 20 stamens are slightly shorter than the petals. The tip of the ovary is densely hairy. The free-standing, two to five styles do not protrude over the stamens. The fruits are black, 8 to 10 millimeters long and 6 to 7 millimeters wide, ovoid to rounded and hairy at the tip. Two or three, rarely four or five pips are formed per fruit. The Doubtful Cotoneaster flowers from May to June, the fruits ripen from September to October.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is in the Chinese provinces of Gansu , Guizhou , Hubei , Ningxia , Shaanxi , Sichuan and Yunnan . The dubious coton grows in steppes and dry forests at 1,800 to 3,000 meters above sea level on moderately dry to fresh, slightly acidic to alkaline, sandy-loamy to loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shaded locations. The species loves warmth and is frost hardy .

Systematics

The Doubtful cotoneaster ( Cotoneaster ambiguus ) is a kind of the genus of cotoneaster ( Cotoneaster ). It is in the family of the rose family (Rosaceae) of the subfamily spiraeoideae, tribes of the subtribe Pyreae maloideae assigned (Pyrinae). The species was first scientifically described in 1912 by Alfred Rehder and Ernest Henry Wilson as Cotoneaster ambigua . The generic name Cotoneaster is derived from the Latin "cotoneum malum" for the quince ( Cydonia oblonga ). The ending "aster" is a coarse form for groups of plants that are considered inferior in comparison to similar groups. The specific epithet ambiguus also comes from Latin and means "ambiguous", which refers to the dubious assignment of the species.

use

The Doubtful Cotoneaster is sometimes used as an ornamental plant because of its remarkable fruits.
