Julian Henderson (Bishop)

Julian Tudor Henderson (born July 23, 1954 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Blackburn in the Church of England since 2013 .

Life

Henderson was born to Ian and Susan Henderson. He attended Radley College in Oxfordshire . He studied at Keble College of the University of Oxford . There he graduated with a Master of Arts (MA Oxon), the so-called Master of Arts (Oxbridge and Dublin) in theology . In preparation for his priesthood, he attended Ridley Hall Theological College, Cambridge .

In 1979 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1980 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1979 to 1983 as Assistant Vicar ( Assistant Curate ) at St Mary's Church, in Islington , London in the Diocese of London. In 1983 he became pastor ( vicar ) at Emmanuel Church, in Hastings and at St Mary-in-the-Castle Church in Hastings in East Sussex in the Diocese of Chichester . From 1992 to 2005 he was pastor ( Vicar ) at the Holy Trinity Church in Claygate in the county of Surrey . During his time in Claygate priest, he also worked from 1996 to 2001 as land Dean ( Rural Dean ) of Emly . In 2002 he was Ehrenkanoniker ( Honorary Canon , Canon) at the Guildford Cathedral . In 2005 he became Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ; head of a church district) of Dorking .

In March 2013, his appointment as the 9th Bishop of Blackburn was announced. He succeeded Nicholas Reade , who retired on October 31, 2012. In September 2013, the Dean and the Chapter of Blackburn Cathedral approved the appointment of Henderson; formal public confirmation took place on September 30, 2013 at York Minster . On 10 October 2013 he was selected by John Sentamu , the Archbishop of York , the York Minster to the bishop consecrated. Henderson is a proponent of women's ordination . His inauguration and enthronement took place on October 19, 2013 at Blackburn Cathedral.

In 1984 he married his wife Heather Lees. The marriage resulted in two grown children, a son and a daughter. His leisure activities include gardening , home improvement and do-it-yourself , walking , reading , tennis and cycling .
