Julian Romantschuk ( Ukrainian Юліан Романчук , Polish Julian Romanczuk ; born February 24, 1842 in Krylos , Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria , Austrian Empire ; † April 22, 1932 in Lwów , Poland ) was a Ukrainian politician, educational and social activist, educator, journalist and writers.

Life

Julian Romantschuk was born into a family of teachers in the village of Krylos ( Крилос ) in today's Halych district of the Ukrainian Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast . He attended school in Stanislawow and Lviv and then studied at Lviv University .

Between 1863 and 1900 he taught classical philology in Lviv as a high school teacher. He was a founding member of Proswita in 1868 and its chairman between 1896 and 1906. He was also one of the founders of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in 1873 and a full member of the Shevchenko Society from 1909. Also in 1873 he founded the newspaper Heimat (Ukrainian Батьківщина ), of which he was also the editor. Furthermore, in 1880 he was a co-founder and member of the editorial team of the newspaper Dilo (Ukrainian Діло ) and co-initiator of the monthly magazine Ruthenische Revue in Vienna.

From 1891 to 1897 and from 1901 to 1918 he was a member of the Austrian Chamber of Deputies from Galicia . In 1899 Romanshuk was co-founder and until 1907 chairman of the Ukrainian National Democratic Party ( Українська національно-демократична партія ). From 1910 onwards he was Vice President of the Austrian Reichsrat .

In 1918 Romantschuk became a delegate of the Ukrainian National Council of the Western Ukrainian People's Republic and on November 10, 1918 he was sworn in by the State Secretariat of the Western Ukrainian VR in Lviv. After the withdrawal of the Ukrainian troops from Lviv in November 1918, he was briefly detained by the Polish authorities. He later took part in the protest rally against the League of Nations' approval of the Polish annexation of Eastern Galicia . Julian Romantschuk died at the age of 90 in Lviv and was buried there in the Lychakiv Cemetery .

He was the father of the impressionist painter and graphic artist Tyt Romantschuk ( Тит Юліанович Романчук ; 1865-1911).
