Julio Ribera (born March 20, 1927 in Barcelona - † May 27, 2018 ) was a Spanish cartoonist .

Artistic career

Ribera began his drawing career in the mid-1940s as an assistant to the illustrator Pedro Alférez . Shortly afterwards, he created the series Rosy and Pirulina for the girls' magazine Florita . In 1948 he drew Batman stories under the title Robin y el murcielago (literally: "Robin and the bat") based on texts by a scenarioist working under the pseudonym Walter Benson for the Spanish market, initially adapting stories that had already appeared in the United States and later completely new stories were thought up. From 1950 Ribera designed the adventures of Pepin y Sulfato for Yumbo magazine . He also drew the Duke series for Detector magazine .

In 1954 Ribera went to France. There he initially worked for the magazines Vaillant , Lisette and Pierrot . In 1957 he developed the science fiction story Tony Sextant for the Bayard publishing house and at the same time published numerous comic strips in magazines and newspapers of the La Bonne Presse publishing house. From 1965 he published in Pilote magazine and drew the vampire parody Dracurella from 1973 to 1982 . Together with the author Christian Godard , he created the series Le Vagabond des Limbes (Eng .: The Vagabonds of Infinity ) in 1975 , which was released directly as an album and was only later published in sections in Tintin magazine . The space odyssey, in which Axel Munshine is looking for a woman from his dreams, received the " Best Album " award at the first Angoulême International Comics Festival in 1976 with the second volume L'Empire des soleils noirs .

Ribera also worked with Godard in 1976 and 1977 for the Larousse series Histoire de France en bandes dessinées . In this series, the history of France starting with the Gauls is presented chronologically in comic form in 24 volumes with two stories each. Godard and Ribera created four of the 48 stories. The rest of the stories were implemented by other scriptwriters (such as Víctor Mora ) and draftsmen (such as Milo Manara ). Two of Ribera's stories also appeared in German in the Classicomics series (in volumes 11 and 12).

Chroniques du temps de la vallée des Ghlomes ( Eng .: Die Wichte ), another collaboration with Godard, was published by Dargaud in 1985 . In 1988 he founded the publishing house Vaisseau d'Argent with Godard, which existed until 1991, in order to publish their joint works himself. Subsequent works such as Le Grand Scandale were published by Dargaud. From 2004 to 2006 Ribera worked on the three-part series Montserrat , in which he turned his life into an autobiographical comic.
