Julius Robert Hoening

Julius Robert Hoening (born May 30, 1835 in Elberfeld , Rhine Province ; † May 24, 1904 in Covington , Louisiana ) was a German-American portrait and landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School . He also worked as a decorative painter and photographer .

Hoening studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy before emigrating to the United States in 1858 . From January 1860 to 1904 he was active in New Orleans . There he shared a studio with the photographers B. & G. Moses and taught drawing with ink and chalk as well as watercolor, oil and pastel painting . In 1885 he founded the art school of the Artists' Association of New Orleans together with Paul Poincy and Andres Molinary (1847-1915).

Hoening was best known for his portraits, but also painted landscapes and animals. He partly combined painting and photography and was awarded a silver medal for the best colored photos in oil and a bronze medal for the best photos in ink at the Grand State Fair in 1870. He later took on commissions for frescoes , both for private households and public institutions such as the French Opera House.
