Julius Jakob Stadler (born August 8, 1828 in Zurich ; died November 26, 1904 in Lauenen ) was a Swiss architect , watercolorist and professor at the ETH Zurich .

Live and act

Julius Stadler, son of the architect Hans Conrad , did an apprenticeship with his father. In 1844 he began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in Karlsruhe and then began studying architecture at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic , studying with Friedrich Eisenlohr . However, in 1848 he had to interrupt his studies because the institute was closed due to the revolution in 1848 . After a short military service in Switzerland, he went to Munich, where due to the unrest he was unable to study; he then studied at the Berlin Building Academy , where he graduated in 1853. This was followed by the educational trip that was often common for young architects at the time and took him to Belgium, France and Italy for two years.

Zurich

In 1855, when the Federal Polytechnic was founded, he was appointed assistant teacher for architectural drawing and assisted the first design professor Gottfried Semper in his design tasks. During this time he became friends with the founding professor of art history Jacob Burckhardt , who left Zurich in 1858.

Since 1868 private lecturer, after Semper's departure in 1872 he became professor for style theory, ornamentation and composition exercises. The latter subject went to Friedrich Bluntschli in 1884 , while he retained style and ornamentation until his retirement in 1893.

From 1868–1869 he was President of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects , in 1883 a member of the jury for the first Swiss National Exhibition , and 1883–1888 President of the Zurich Art Society .

meaning

In view of the narrow architectural work, his importance lies primarily as a watercolorist of architectural landscapes and as a teacher of several generations of architects; his excursions to the northern Italian lakes and the Florentine landscape are emphasized .
