Julius Wortmann

Julius Wortmann (born August 15, 1856 in Höxter ( Westphalia ), † June 28, 1925 in Boppard ) was a German mycologist . In 1894 he founded the first yeast cultivation station at the teaching and research institute for viticulture, fruit growing and horticulture in Geisenheim .

Life path

Julius Wortmann attended elementary school in Höxter and a private school in Lübbecke , as well as the secondary school in Elberfeld . He studied the natural sciences in Berlin and Würzburg. In Würzburg, he was in 1879 when Julius Sachs with the theme "On the relations of intra Molecularen to normal respiration of plants" Dr. rer. nat. PhD. The following year he got a job as an assistant to Anton de Bary at the newly founded Kaiser Wilhelm University in Strasbourg . After his habilitation in 1883, he gave lectures on plant physiology . For a period of 10 years he worked together with the institute's board in the editorial office of the Botanische Zeitung.

Research and Teaching

As the successor to Professor Hermann Müller (Thurgau) , he was head of the plant physiological research station in Geisenheim from 1891 to 1903. In 1903 he was appointed professor and director of the plant physiological experimental station there. Wortmann's research focus in Geisenheim was fermentation physiology . He recognized at an early stage the practical value of scientifically founded fermentation science and founded the first yeast inoculation station in Geisenheim in 1894 . He headed this station until 1924.

From 1903 to 1921 Wortmann was director of the teaching and research institute for viticulture, fruit growing and horticulture in Geisenheim. He succeeded Rudolf Goethe in the chairmanship of the Prussian vine grafting commission, where he worked until 1924. In 1907 Julius Wortmann was appointed a secret councilor. He was a board member in many associations and organizations.

Honors

In 1892 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
