Julius Anton Karl von Kaan-Albest (born March 8, 1874 in Munich , † December 12, 1941 in Berlin-Schöneberg ) was a painter and illustrator.

Life and works

Julius von Kaan-Albest a nephew of the sculptor von Pfretzschner and a cousin of the sculptor Arthur Kaan . He graduated from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich in 1894 and was trained by Anton Ažbe in Munich in 1895/96 . From 1897 he worked on illustrations for the history of the Austrian 42nd Infantry Regiment, from 1900 he himself served as an active Austrian officer, where he was often assigned to do portraits and other jobs. In 1901 he created the colossal painting Battle of Wagram , which came to the Theresienstadt City Museum . On December 15, 1904, Lieutenant Julius von Kaan-Albest gave a lecture entitled Modern Art in Königgrätz. In 1909 he painted Archduke Karl at the Battle of Wagram . In 1909/10 he taught at the cadet school in Marburg in Styria , from 1910 to 1914 at the cadet school in Vienna . There he attended the art academy from 1911 to 1914. R. Backer and H. Heller were among his teachers. In 1915 he worked as a war painter on the Austrian fronts during the First World War . In addition to battle pictures, portraits were also created during this time. His painting Crossing the Austrian Army across the Italian Border, May 1916 was hung in the palace of Archduke Joseph Ferdinand on Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna. About 20 pictures became the property of the Vienna Army Museum. He is listed in the Staats-Handbuch of 1918 as a captain who was decorated with the Austrian Knight's Order .

From 1919 Julius von Kaan-Albest worked in Tyrol , where he lived in Steinach am Brenner , and took part in numerous exhibitions. Between 1921 and 1924 he painted the monumental painting Last Great Hereditary Homage in Tyrol, Innsbruck 1838 for the Innsbruck Hofburg . In 1923 he created the Schlosshofvedute Schloss Tirol , which is now owned by the South Tyrolean State Museum for Cultural and Regional History there. Several works by Kaan-Albests passed into the possession of the Kaiserjägermuseum and the Kaiserschützenmuseum in Innsbruck. A painting with the title Roman Forum was in the possession of the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich. A triptych called Praga belonged to the “Schlaraffia” in Marburg. After the First World War, Julius von Kaan-Albest spent his winters in Berlin, where he later evidently moved entirely. In Berlin he lived at Fichtestrasse 11 in Steglitz . Julius von Kaan-Albest died during the Second World War .
