Arthur Kaan (also Artur Kaan , born February 24, 1864 in Klagenfurt , † June 9, 1940 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Life

Arthur Kaan received his first lessons from the sculptor Rudolf Zafouk in Vienna. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, his teachers were Carl Kundmann and Edmund Hellmer . From 1886 Kaan worked independently in Vienna. In 1896 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus . He made numerous monumental and small sculptures , with children's busts and tombs being his specialty.

Stylistically, Kaan belongs to the generation of artists in which sculpture had lost part of its independence and was degraded to a status in the building, which made it subordinate to architecture .

At the beginning of the First World War Kaan was temporarily relieved of the obligation to enlist due to work on the Kaiser Franz-Joseph-Stadtmuseum, but was subsequently drafted into Infantry Regiment No. 4 "Hoch- und Deutschmeister" . He asked for admission to the Imperial and Royal War Press Headquarters , to which he belonged from July 3, 1917. He survived the First World War and was suspended on September 15, 1918.

He died during the Second World War on June 9, 1940, after a long and serious illness, in the 18th district of Vienna , at Schumanngasse 16. Nothing was reported in the press about his death. His grave is (?) / Was at Vienna Central Cemetery Group 34A, Row 8, No. 29. Since the grave was not an honorary grave , the right of use had expired in 2004.
