action

To lead a conventional life and to bow to his father's desire to study law, Yossi Ghinsberg does not yet feel up to it . Instead, the Israeli adventurer sets out on a trip to Latin America in the early 80s . In 1981 he first made friends with Marcus Stamm, a Swiss teacher, in Colombia. In Bolivia, the two unexpectedly meet Marcus' friend Kevin Gale, an American nature photographer, and travel with him from now on. In La Paz , where one of the three has an apartment, Yossi gets to know the Austrian Karl Ruprecht, who speaks to him on the street and subsequently engages in a conversation. The dropout and alleged geologist Ruprecht can persuade Yossi, and then also Marcus and Kevin, to go on a jungle trip, where the three of them should get to know an indigenous tribe that has been living untouched by civilization and where there should be larger gold deposits. After Karl had selected supplies and equipment in a shop, Karl, to their amazement, had the other three travelers pay the entire bill.

The trip through the untouched wilderness initially fulfills the hopes of the young men for a unique, enriching experience. When the groceries are running low and Marcus can hardly keep up with sore feet, the men's still “young” friendship is put to the test. First, you decide to return to civilization together on a raft built on site. However, after a disagreement between Karl and Kevin during the first part of the raft trip, the group separates. Yossi and Kevin want to reach their destination by continuing on the raft, while Marcus, whose condition of his feet has improved significantly in the meantime, and Karl continue the journey on foot and want to reach a settlement within three days' march. People want to meet again in La Paz.

The raft of Yossi and Kevin then capsizes in rapids and the two are separated from each other. While Kevin was found by fishermen a few days later and brought to the next town, Rurrenabaque , Yossi began a three-week struggle for survival around 190 km upstream. A settlement near the river that Karl has drawn on a map turns out to be deserted. Alone Yossi is exposed to the dangers of the South American jungle, survival seems impossible. Kevin, however, does not want to give up his friend and first searches for Yossi by plane and then by boat together with a local fisherman, until he is ultimately found completely exhausted but alive by the two of them on the river bank.

In the credits of the film it is reported that Karl was wanted by the police and had already encouraged backpackers to tour the rainforest several times in the past. The indigenous tribe described by Karl does not exist. Marcus and Karl never arrived in La Paz and their whereabouts after the separation from Yossi and Kevin is still unclear.
