Jurij Knebel

Jurij Josef Knebel ( Upper Sorbian Jurij Józef Knebel ; born March 24, 1934 in Storcha ; † April 14, 2020 ) was a Sorbian prehistorian and archaeologist who primarily dealt with the prehistory of Upper Lusatia .

Life

After graduating from the Sorbian High School, he studied archeology and early history in Leipzig at the suggestion of his teacher Anton Nawka . After mediation by the director of the Institute for Sorbian Folk Research Pawoł Nowotny , he was able to gain experience on a study visit to Łódź , participate in excavations and learn Polish. In Lusatia he was involved in the excavations of an almost thousand year old Milzen cemetery near Liebon and the castle wall of Tornow .

From 1957 he was the first archaeologist to work at the Institute for Sorbian Folk Research and as a research assistant he was involved, among other things, in the first volume of the history of the Sorbs and the large-scale study of Groß Partwitz in the 1970s, which was planned to be demolished . He was also responsible for some entries in the Nowy biografiski słownik [New Biographical Dictionary]. In 1992 he retired.

Knebel was married and lived in Göda .
