Justo Oscar Laguna (born September 25, 1929 in Buenos Aires ; † November 3, 2011 ibid) was an Argentine clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Morón .

Life

Justo Oscar Laguna, the son of Spanish parents, was ordained a priest on September 18, 1954 . He was pastor of the Cathedral of San Isidro , Buenos Aires, later spiritual and spiritual director of the diocesan seminary and rector of the seminary for two decades. In 1961 he became chancellor in the diocese of San Isidro; from 1962 to 1980 he was vicar general .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 1, 1975 titular bishop of Lares and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the diocese of San Isidro . The bishop of San Isidro, Antonio María Aguirre , ordained him episcopal on March 8 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Alberto Devoto , Bishop of Goya and Manuel Tato , Bishop of Santiago del Estero . His episcopal motto was "Verbo tuo laxabo rete".

On January 22nd, 1980 he was appointed Bishop of Morón by Pope John Paul II , and on March 22nd of the same year he was installed in office.

On November 30, 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation; nevertheless he was apostolic administrator of Morón until the appointment of his successor Luis Guillermo Eichhorn . He died of complications from heart surgery and was buried in the Cathedral of Morón.

For several years he was President of the Commission for Social Pastoral Care and President of the Theological Commission (now Faith and Culture) as well as Chairman of the Commission for Ecumenism of the Argentine Bishops' Conference .

Act

Justo Oscar Laguna was considered one of the most important figures in the Argentine Church over the past 30 years. He sought dialogue and was committed to the social sector in Argentina. During the military governments of Jorge Rafael Videla , Roberto Eduardo Viola and Carlos Alberto Lacoste as well as Leopoldo Galtieri , he worked on a draft for the restoration of constitutional powers on behalf of the Bishops' Conference. He was a member of the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights. After the Falklands War in 1982, he called on the people of Argentina to peace and democracy in a speech to the Servicio de la Reconciliación Nacional . He had a lifelong friendship with Raúl Alfonsín ; he donated the anointing of the sick to him on the anniversary of his death on March 31, 2009 . Although he was considered a moderator bishop, he was a critic of the presidency of Carlos Menem .

Laguna was committed to Christian unity and had a deep dialogue with the scholar and rabbi of Buenos Aires, Mario Rojzman . Pilgrimages to Jerusalem were carried out together. After a meeting with Pope John Paul II, he and Mario Rojzman wrote the book “Todos los caminos conducen a Jerusalén (y también a Roma)” (German: All roads lead to Jerusalem (and Rome)).
