The K-335 Gepard (Russian: Гепард ) is a Russian multi-purpose submarine cruiser of the Shchuka B-class (Project 971). It is the most modern submarine in its class. After the designation system of NATO is a nuclear-powered hunter-killer of the Akula class .

construction

On September 23, 1991, K-335 was laid down in the construction halls of Severnoye Mashinostroitelnoje Predprijatije , Sewmash for short , in Severodvinsk . The inclusion in the fleet list, the assignment as a hunting submarine of the project 971M (NATO name Akula ) as well as the christening under the name Gepard took place on February 22, 1993. In 1996 the work on the boat came to a standstill due to financial difficulties the handover to the fleet scheduled for 1998 expired. Then the then new Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited the shipyard and personally campaigned for further construction. On September 17, 1999, the K-335 was finally rolled out of the building hall and, after extensive testing, put into service with the Northern Fleet on December 5, 2001 . This made it the first new submarine to enter service in Russia in the 21st century. President Putin was also present at the flag-raising ceremony for the naval fleet and simply described the day as an “important national event”. As a result, Putin had campaigned for a comprehensive modernization of the Russian armed forces and had the Gepard completed as an incentive . The shipyard even used its own funds for the completion, while government funds were scarce. K-335 Gepard was completed on credit.

Service in the naval navy of the Russian Federation

On December 5, 2001, the acceptance / handover protocol was signed and thus the handover to the naval fleet . The transfer to the Northern Fleet and the incorporation into the stock of the 24th Division of the 3rd Flotilla at the base Gadschijewo took place until mid-2002. The first long-term patrol journey led in early 2003 through the Atlantic to the east coast of the USA and then to Newfoundland. According to Russian sources, neither the SOSUS system nor the US Navy or the Royal Canadian Navy were able to track K-335 Gepard . In March 2003 the submarine returned to Gadschijewo. This was followed by a few short patrols in the Barents Sea and another three-month patrol in the North Sea . At the end of September 2004, K-335, together with the destroyer Admiral Tshabanenko, took part in maneuvers with the French Navy in the Atlantic. Since 2005 there have been regular three-month patrols in the Atlantic and the North Sea, as well as participation in maneuvers in the Barents Sea. On June 4, 2007, the crew of K-335 received the highest grade of operational readiness. The first repair and modernization is probably scheduled for 2008 or 2009.

draft

Like its sister ship K-157, the K-335 belongs to the 971M project, but it still looks a little different. You don't know exactly why. It is possible that the boat was rescheduled during the long construction phase and adapted to new technical developments, as the construction of the next generation of submarines came to a standstill due to lack of money and finally had to be discontinued. Although the K-335 is still under the 971M project, it is basically a design that has been further developed. The turret has probably been enlarged (perhaps for additional reconnaissance systems and an enlarged escape capsule ), the hollow body for the towing sonar on the rear upper rudder is smaller. As a result of various technical innovations, the boat is sometimes referred to as the "Akula III" class.

Armament

The main armament consists of eight torpedo tubes , like the other boats of the Akula class, four with a caliber of 533 millimeters and four with 650 millimeters. There are also six launching tubes with a caliber of 533 millimeters, which are located outside the pressure hull. From these either cruise missiles Granat / Calibrate can be fired. The Malachit design office once intended to accommodate a further 12 cruise missiles on the submarine with a combat set of 34 torpedoes. Now, however, there was only room for six in the torpedo section, which could be fired from the normal 533 mm torpedo tubes. Without further ado, it was decided to place another six launch tubes outside the pressure hull. They can only be reloaded from the outside, i.e. in the port, but the required capacity of 12 cruise missiles was achieved. Most of the time, the Gepard only carries six RK-55s in these launch tubes and can thus take up a combat set of 40 torpedoes. Torpedoes of the types UGST, USET-80, RLUPR-86R, WA-111 Shkwal as well as anti -submarine missiles RPK-6 Wodopad and cruise missiles RK-55 are used from the 533 mm tubes . The 650 mm tubes can use type 65-76 torpedoes and RPK-7 Weter anti -submarine missiles .
