The Dieter Hildebrandt Prize has been awarded annually since 2016 to cabaret artists or ensembles who have already made a name for themselves with political or social programs. It is endowed with 10,000 euros (as of 2020).

The prize is the successor to the Cabaret Prize awarded by the State Capital of Munich until 2013 , which has been awarded by the Munich City Council since 1995 - alternating with the State Capital of Munich's Dance Prize since 2001 . Only artists or ensembles who have their place of residence or their place of work in the Munich region or whose work is closely linked to Munich's theatrical life were considered as winners. The prize was awarded for outstanding artistic performance in the creative areas of cabaret and cabaret . The right of proposal lay with a commission appointed by the city council, consisting of specialist jurors and members of the voluntary city council. The award was endowed with 6,000 euros.

With the decision of the Culture Committee of the Munich City Council on April 16, 2015, this prize was renamed the Dieter Hildebrandt Prize and is now awarded annually. With the creation of the Dieter Hildebrandt Prize, the City of Munich honors the cabaret artist Dieter Hildebrandt, who died in 2013 .
