description

Inflorescence of Kadua parvula

Vegetative characteristics

Kadua parvula grows as a small, upright or spreading shrub with many branches , the trunks of which reach lengths of 0.1 to 0.4 meters. The trunks have a square cross-section. All shoots are hairless.

The constantly against arranged on the branches leaves are divided into a petiole and leaf blade. The petiole is 0 to 0.2 inches long. The simple, leathery leaf blade is 1 to 4 centimeters long and 0.7 to 2.3 centimeters wide and is lanceolate to ovate-heart-shaped. The top of the leaf blade is glabrous just like the underside. The spreading edge, which is slightly bent back, is entire. Several pairs of lateral nerves branch off from each side of the leaf median nerve. The stipules are similar to the deciduous leaves, are fused with the base of the petiole and thus form a strongly keeled and prickly-tipped leaf sheath . The triangular leaf sheath has a 0.2 to 0.3 centimeter long spike tip.

Generative characteristics

The narrow panicle-like inflorescences stand on an inflorescence stalk and are sometimes so crowded together that one could get the impression of a single, large inflorescence. The inflorescences contain several single stalked flowers. The flower stalks are 0.2 to 0.8 inches long.

The four-fold flowers are radial symmetry . The circular to cup-shaped flower cup is 0.1 to 0.15 centimeters long. The sepals are fused together to form a calyx tube. The slightly leaf-like calyx lobes are frustum-shaped with a length of 0.1 to 0.4 centimeters and a width of 0.1 to 0.2 centimeters. The fleshy, white petals tinted purple-pink towards the tip are fused together in the shape of a plate or funnel. The corolla tube reaches a length of 0.8 to 1.1 centimeters and has a non-square cross-section. The four inwardly curved crown lobes reach lengths of around 0.5 to 0.6 centimeters. The stylus, which is slightly lobed twice, is woolly hairy in the middle.

The capsule fruits are roughly spherical in shape with a length of around 0.33 to 0.4 centimeters and a thickness of about 0.35 to 0.4 centimeters. The endocarp is moderately lignified. Each of the fruits contains several brown seeds. They are more or less irregularly shaped like a shield and the seed coat is dark, grained.

Occurrence and endangerment

The natural range of Kadua parvula is on the Hawaiian island of Oahu . It includes the Wai'anae mountain range there .

Kadua parvula thrives at altitudes of 720 to 830 meters. The species grows on the bottom of rock walls, on rock outcrops and under rock ledges. At these locations the species grows together with Dodonaea viscosa , Plectranthus parviflorus and Psydrax obovata .

Kadua parvula is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List . Displacement by invasive species as well as habitat destruction by introduced and feral animals as well as fires are named as the main endangerment factors. The total stock, which comprises three subpopulations consisting of a total of 193 plants , is viewed as declining.

Taxonomy

It was first described as Kadua parvula in 1860 by Asa Gray in Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
