Kai Kobad III. , with full name Alā al-Dīn Kai Kobad bin Ferāmurz , (علا الدين كيقباد بن فراموزس; Turkish III. Alâeddin Keykubad ; † 1303 in Isfahan ) was a Seljuk Sultan of Rum and grandson of Kai Kaus' II. He ruled several times between 1284 and 1303. Before 1298, little is known about his life.

His grandfather Kai Kaus II lost the important battle of the Köse Dağ against the Mongolian Ilkhan and fled the sultanate. The Sultans of Rum were forced under the rule of the Ilkhan and ruled as vassals under their supervision.

Kai Kobad III. first claimed the throne around 1283. He was supported by the Beylik Karaman . However, he was from the vizier of the Ilchane Sahip Ata and Kai Chosrau III. defeated. Kai Kobad III. lost and fled to Cilicia to the Armenian princes. He was appointed sultan in 1298 by the ruler of the Ilkhan Gazan in place of his cousin Mas'ud II , who fell from grace. Kai Kobad III. met Gazan near Mosul when he was returning from a campaign against Syria. Delighted with this loyalty, Gazan Kai wed Kobad III. with a daughter of Hülegü . Soon there were complaints about Kai Kobad III. and his ministers because they stole wealth from wealthy people through torture and death. The Ilkhan Gazan then decreed that Kai Kobad III. no longer be allowed to make decisions without the consent of the Mongols.

When the Mongols punished some of his ministers, Kai Kobad III was alerted, so that he wanted to flee. However, he was caught at Urgup and sent to Tabriz and disempowered. Mas'ud II was reinstated in his place. Because of his offense, Kai Kobad III. Sentenced to death, but escaped execution due to his noble wife. The sentence was commuted to house arrest in Isfahan. There Kai Kobad III was. 1303 stabbed to death by one of his servants during an argument. His body was placed in the family vault in Konya. According to the contemporary historian Niğdeli Kadı Ahmed, Kai Kobad III climbed. only twice the throne, 1298 and 1301–1303.

His most important official act was to have a major impact on the centuries to come. In 1299 he gave Osman , ruler of a small area in western Anatolia, the title of prince ( Bey ) and his area the rank of Beylik . So he created the foundations of the Ottoman Empire . Later reports that Kai Kobad III. Loved Osman like a son and wrote him letters of praise are made up.
