history

Elevation of the street front (1898)

The villa was built for the client Johann Balg, a businessman , based on a design by the Bonn architect Hermann Schmitt (* 1854; † after 1934). It was one of the first on Kaiser-Friedrich-Strasse, which was completed in 1897. In response to the building application from February 1898, the building permit was granted in March , and on August 3, 1898 the shell was accepted . The eastern half-villa (No. 10) passed into the possession of Otto Budde in 1899, who had it extended by a stable and coach house that same year . In 1900 a winter garden was added to the first floor to cover the driveway, and in 1901 an enclosure was created. The owner of the western half-villa (No. 8) had become Mrs. Real Privy Councilor Huyssen in 1905 , of whom plans to increase the building on the mansard floor are known that year . An application to demolish the western half-villa from 1935 was not granted, instead it was converted into an apartment building .

During the Second World War , the double villa suffered considerable damage, including the top floor and in particular the tower on the right-hand side of the street that was not restored later in a fire. Repair work was carried out in 1948, and in 1957 the attic was rebuilt, removing the stucco and cornice . The federal government , the new owner of the villa, which is now in the middle of the new parliament and government district , used it to house various offices. Half-villa No. 8 served temporarily (as of 1958) as the office building of the Embassy of Vietnam . The double villa later housed part of the Foreign Office with 51 employees (status: 1974). A part of the Federal President's Office was last housed here. After this moved to Berlin in 1998 as a result of the decision to relocate the seat of government , the Federal Cartel Office took over the villa. In connection with the new use, the villa was listed in 1999 .

A conference room was added to the south side of the building for the purposes of the Federal Cartel Office.
