In 1924 he became Swedish champion in the men's competition, after having stood on the podium four times in the previous years. His only international participation in the individual run was at the European Championships in Oslo in 1923 . There he was fourth and last.
His first figure skating partner was Ragnvi Torslow . In 1918 and 1919 they became national runners-up and in 1920 they finally became Swedish champions in pair skating. From 1921 Ekström started alongside Elna Henrikson . They promptly became Swedish champions. They succeeded again in 1923 and 1924. In 1922 they were runner-up. With Henrikson he took part in two world championships. In 1923 in Kristiania , the couple won the bronze medal behind Ludowika Jakobsson and Walter Jakobsson , who started for Finland, and the Norwegians Alexia Bryn and Yngvar Bryn . At the World Cup in Manchester in 1924 , Ekström and Henrikson won bronze again, this time behind the Austrians Helene Engelmann and Alfred Berger and the British Ethel Muckelt and John Page .
