Kalacakra was a psychedelic rock band that was founded in Duisburg around 1971 .

history

" Kalacakra " - the c is pronounced like ch - is Tibetan and means "wheel of time". That is how two Duisburg friends called themselves at the beginning of the 1970s, who lived together in the Hochfeld district and played as "Kalacakra". For Claus Rauschenbach it was his first group, but Heinz Martin had already gained a lot of stage experience. At that time he ran a shop for musical instruments and Indian antiques. After a few demo recordings in the attic, they went to the Willy Neubauer studio in Düsseldorf in 1972 and recorded the pieces for an LP on an eight-track system, which was self-published in the same year as Crawling to Lhasa in an edition of 1,000. The music was written by Heinz Martin, the lyrics are from Claus Rauschenbach. The cover shows a black mandala on a white background. At that time, the record received hardly any attention. There were very few appearances, including one as the opening act for Bröselmaschine and one as the opening act for Moondog . After only a year, Kalacakra was over again.

The value of the original LP from the first pressing has risen sharply over the years and is now around € 1000 in top condition. The record enjoys cult status among collectors and lovers of this type of music. In the meantime there are several new editions of it, as vinyl LP and CD, legal and illegal.

In 2002 Heinz Martin briefly revived the group in the studio, albeit with new people, and recorded the CD Peace with them , which is more in the direction of world music and, compared to the debut, went down a bit. With that the chapter Kalacakra was finally closed.
