Singapore's longest river |
The Kallang River ( Chinese 加 冷 河 , Malay Sungai Kallang ) is around ten kilometers long and is the longest of a total of 90 rivers in Singapore .
course
From the Lower Peirce Reservoir or Kallang River Reservoir in the North West District , one of the oldest reservoirs in Singapore, the Kallang River flows first southeast, then south to its confluence in the Central Singapore District into Kallang Bay , a northern part of the Strait of Singapore and with it of the Pacific Ocean . Due to land reclamation, it now runs the last few kilometers as the Marina Canal between the Marina Center and Marina East .
history
In pre-colonial times, the Orang Laut people lived on the banks and in the swamps around the Kallang estuary. The place served as a refuge for pirates and a trading post for mussels, turtles and slaves for Bugis from Sulawesi and seafarers from China and Malaysia . In 1819, when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles , trading agent for the British East India Company , established the first British branch in Singapore, around 1,000 Bajaus lived here . The palari or leteh-leteh , sailboats used by local fishermen, were a common sight at sea until the 1960s.
Redevelopment
In April 2006, the Singapore government announced a rehabilitation of the river in the Kolam Ayer district. The 200 meter section should cost S $ 2.5 million . The aim was to improve the quality of the area. In August 2007, the construction of promenades, paths, platforms and green spaces began. In 2012 the project was presented to the public by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong .
free time activities
The Bishan-An Mo Kio Park , the Singapore Island Golf Course , the Kallang Riverside Parks and the Gardens by the Bay extend along the shore .
The Kallang River is a popular spot for water sports such as water skiing , wakeboarding , kayaking, and dragon boat racing . The Singapore Flyer , the second highest Ferris wheel in the world at a height of 165 meters , is located on Marina Bay , and right next to it is the Marina Bay Street Circuit , a motorsport track for Formula 1 races .
