geography

Kaltenherberg is located southwest of Coburg , about 21 kilometers away, on a flat eastern slope of the Itzgrund . At the southernmost place in the district of Coburg, on the border with the district of Bamberg , the federal road 4 passes.

history

Kaltenherberg was first mentioned in a document in 1503. The "Kaltckleyten" settlement was one of the places that paid homage to the Michelsberg monastery .

"Kaltenherberg" in Itzgrund on the trade route from Nuremberg to the north is documented for 1648. The property was built by the Swedish cavalry officer Johann Weststett. It served as a refreshment station and overnight stay. In 1870 the innkeeper Joseph Franz received the brewing license. In 1935 the Wittmann family took over the brewery and the inn. In the 1950s and 1960s, the inn was a popular place for excursions. In 1963 the Wittman brewery ceased operations. In 1977 the property burned down except for the former servants' house, called Obere Sölde, and was not rebuilt.

In 1875 ten people lived in Kaltenherberg with its six buildings. In 1925 the wasteland had five residents and one house. The children went to school in Busendorf, 1.3 kilometers away. In 1987 no one lived in the one remaining house.

In the 19th century, Kaltenherberg was incorporated into Lahm . In 1862 it was incorporated into the newly created Bavarian district office in Staffelstein . On July 1, 1972, the Staffelstein district was dissolved. Since then, Kaltenherberg has been part of the Coburg district . In the course of the Bavarian regional reform , Lahm lost its independence as a municipality on May 1, 1978 and, like his district of Kaltenherberg, became part of the municipality of Itzgrund.
