The Kaltschyk rises at an altitude of 250 m in the Azov highlands near Wilne ( Вільне ) and initially flows northeast in the Rosivka district of the Zaporizhia Oblast . In Volodarske Raion , in the southwest of Donetsk Oblast , it changes its direction of flow to the southeast and in Manhush Raion (former Perschotrawnewe Raion) and Nikolske Raion , it changes to the south until it finally flows, mainly to the east, within the urban area of Mariupol from right to Kalmius flows into the Sea of Azov six kilometers from its mouth .

The water of the Kaltschyk is used for irrigation, fish farming and the water supply of Mariupol.
The origin of the river name is questionable: according to one version it comes from the Slavic word kal and means dirt , according to another version the name is of Scythian origin and means black .
