Kamichu! ( Japanese. か み ち ゅ! , Kamichu! short for Kami-sama de Chūgakusei ! , German “a deity as a middle school student!”) is an anime - television series and a manga . The basic idea comes from the group Besame Mūcho ( ベ サ メ ム ー チ ョ , from Besame Mucho ), which consists of the producer Tomonori Ochiai , the director Kōji Masunari and the screenwriter Hideyuki Kurata.
The plot revolves around the Japanese middle school student Yurie Hitotsubashi, who suddenly became a goddess and now has to cope with her task, with the support of her friends. The series addresses many elements of Shinto .
action
The reserved and inconspicuous middle school student Yurie Hitotsubashi ( 一 橋 ゆ り え ) lives in Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture . One morning in the spring of 1983 she discovers that she has become a goddess ( 神 , kami ), but she does not know what to do with her new strength. Her friends nicknamed her Kamichu, from kami , god, and chūgakusei , middle school student .
Her classmate Matsuri Saegusa ( 三 枝 祀 ), who lives in a nearby Shinto shrine and is a priestess, becomes her manager and wants to use her to make the shrine better known and more profitable. Her previous god, Yashima-sama ( 八 島 様 ), could not lure customers because he is obsessed with becoming a rock star. Now Yurie is supposed to grant wishes at school and work for the temple. Matsuri's little sister Miko Saegusa ( 三 枝 み こ ), a Miko , had confirmed the powers of Yurie. She is the only one who can see the god beings next to Yurie. At the same time, Yurie tries to get the attention of Kenji Ninomiya ( 二 宮 健 児 ), a quiet calligraphy enthusiast with whom she has fallen in love.
Soon after, Yashima leaves the shrine and goes into the world of the gods. Since he is missing, Yurie follows him and gets to know the other gods of Shinto. She convinces him to return, but from time to time he takes possession of Yurie's girlfriend Mitsue Shijō ( 四条 光 恵 ) in order to live out his passion for music.
When the bankruptcy god comes to town, he plunges the local economy into a crisis. When Yurie's cat Tama runs away and almost drowns in the sea, the bankrupt god takes possession of her and saves her. He then continues to live with Yurie in her cat, who then becomes intelligent, and no longer causes any harm. Soon after, three helpers are sent to Yurie by the association of gods. They should support them in their tasks. In the following time she is used by the government against aliens, takes care of the people and animals of the city and takes part in meetings of the gods.
Ultimately, she succeeds in confessing her love to Kenji and coping with her life as a goddess and student.
Conception
The series deals with the diversity of the Shinto world of gods and their manifestations. So Yurie is an arahitogami , other gods and spirits also appear. Historical themes are also taken up, such as the battleship Yamato , which sank in the Pacific during World War II and is brought back to Japan by Yurie in the tenth episode of the series.
There are also some running gags in the series. For example, the cat Tama, who has become intelligent but tries unsuccessfully to keep this secret from Yurie's brother Shōkichi Hitotsubashi or Yurie's girlfriend, who is repeatedly controlled by Yashima.
The last names of the protagonists are numbered: Hitotsubashi = "1 bridge", Ninomiya = "2 shrines", Saegusa = "3 branches" and Shijō = "4 pieces". The first names of the two Saegusa sisters also have a reference to the shrine: Matsuri denotes folk festivals organized by shrines and Miko shrine girls. Yurie's three assistants - a boar, a deer and a butterfly - make up a winning hand in the Hanafuda variation Koi-Koi.
