description

Vegetative characteristics

The Canaries mock crocus is a perennial herbaceous plant . This geophyte forms tubers as persistent organs. It reaches a height of 3 to 15 centimeters. The basal leaves are square, furrowed and relatively long.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period in the Canary Islands lasts from January to April. On a short ( Romulea grandiscapa fo. Breviscapa ) or long ( Romulea grandiscapa fo. Grandiscapa ) inflorescence stem there is a one (to four) flowered inflorescence . The sessile flowers are surrounded by two skin-edged bracts. The bracts are ovate to lanceolate and measure 12 to 22 millimeters in length.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The six almost identically shaped bracts have a length of 20 to 35 millimeters and are fused bell-shaped at their base. The perigone is whitish with violet nerves, the throat and the tube are yellowish. There is only one circle with three stamens . The stylus ends in six scar branches and clearly towers above the anthers .

The capsule fruit is blunt and elongated.

Occurrence

The Canarian mock crocus is native to the Macaronesian Islands: Canary Islands and Madeira . However, it is unclear whether a second species might not occur after all. It can be found in pine forests and pastureland at altitudes of 150 to about 800 meters.

Taxonomy

This species was in 1847 by Philip Barker Webb under the name Trichonema grandiscapum in Histoire Naturelle des Iles Canaries , 2 (3), p 312 firstdescribed . Jacques Étienne Gay placed it in 1877 under the name Romulea grandiscapa in John Gilbert Baker : Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany , Volume 16, p. 87 in the genus Romulea . Further synonyms for Romulea grandiscapa (Webb) J. Gay ex Baker are: Romulea columnae Seb. et Mauri subsp. grandiscapa (Webb) Kunk. , Romulea lactea Abraham .
