action

Wade Corey breaks down his car on the way to New York City and rides a freight train as a stowaway. In the car he meets Doyle Kennedy, who persuades him to come with him to his hometown in rural Kansas . When they arrive, everyone is on their feet in the provincial nest, as the governor of Kansas pays a visit to the place. The two destitute people break into a farmhouse to get new clothes and food.

During the festivities, Doyle leads Wade to the local Crescent County Bank on an excuse. Doyle knocks the guard down and forces Wade with the captured weapon to help him with the robbery. The only employee is currently in the toilet, is tied up there by Doyle and will later only report on one perpetrator. After the alarm goes off, Doyle and Wade split on the run. Wade, who is carrying the prey, hides it under the bridge of the nearby river. During the search that followed, two patrol cars collide in front of the bridge at precisely this point. The car parked here with the governor's little daughter is pushed into the river. Wade rescues the girl from the sinking car and is photographed by local reporter Nelson Alquist. Wade flees after laying the girl on the bank and soon finds a temporary job as a harvest worker on a remote grain farm.

Here he immediately begins to be interested in the pretty farmer's daughter Lori Bayles. Doyle is now working for a showwoman at the fair. Here he meets Wade, who came to town with some farm workers to have fun. The two arrange to meet by the river the next evening. It happens by chance that Lori and Wade meet in the barn the following evening and become intimate in the process. Wade missed his meeting with Doyle because of this. The enraged Doyle visits Wade on the farm, arranges a new meeting and sets a barn on fire as a “reminder”. During the subsequent extinguishing work, reporter Alquist recognizes the lifesaver Wade. The governor is to award the hero Wade a medal. The noose is slowly tightening around Doyle, who has already been identified as a bank robber because of his eye-catching tattoo . At night he penetrates reporter Nelson Alquist and tells him that he and the supposed hero Wade Corey have robbed the bank. When Nelson then looked through the many photos he had taken on the occasion of the governor's visit, Nelson actually discovers one that shows Wade and Doyle together. He senses a great story for his newspaper. At the nightly meeting on the bridge, Doyle Wade takes the loot by force.

The next day Doyle and his lover Drifter run into a police roadblock and are fatally wounded trying to break through them. In the meantime, Wade has made off with Lori and transferred the whole assembled company, including the governor. A police officer informs Alquist of Doyle's death and the booty seized in full, whereupon he destroys the draft of his story about the double life of Wade. Wade says goodbye to Lori and jumps on a passing freight train. Shortly afterwards, he had doubts about what he was doing. Finally, he jumped out of the car and was received by the overjoyed Lori.
