The Kant-Gymnasium is a general education high school, which is located in the center of Karlsruhe right next to the university. The school is named after the Königsberg philosopher Immanuel Kant .
history
The Kant-Gymnasium was founded on October 7, 1863 as a higher middle school. The school building, which was built in Englerstraße in 1873, was designed by Heinrich Lang .
After six lower-level classes with students from Rintheim , Hagsfeld , Waldstadt and Oststadt had to be relocated to the Heinrich-Köhler-Schule in 1966 and nine classes had to remain in Rintheim in 1968 despite an extension in Waldhornstraße, it was five years later Construction time on August 15, 1969, the Northeast Gymnasium (today Otto Hahn Gymnasium) was independent and the school was divided. Before that it was a branch of the Kant-Gymnasium in Rintheim with eleven outsourced classes. At times, buses from the city were also used for students from the outer districts of the city.
profile
The Kant-Gymnasium offers a linguistic and a scientific course. All students start with the foreign language English in the fifth grade. In the sixth grade, French or Latin follow as a second foreign language. From the eighth grade onwards, students choose the linguistic train with the third foreign language ( Russian or Italian) or the natural science train ( science and technology - NwT).
To strengthen its scientific profile, the Kant-Gymnasium has been participating in the computer science trial since the 2019/20 school year and is therefore entitled to offer computer science in the upper level as a 3-hour basic subject and a 5-hour advanced subject.
The Kant-Gymnasium is the only gymnasium in Karlsruhe where you can choose Russian as a third foreign language.
Pupil care
The Kant-Gymnasium has been offering open afternoon care since the 2003/05 school year in cooperation with the Children's City Church. It includes lunch together in the school's own canteen, which opened in 2019, followed by homework supervision and various sports activities. Since 2006 the school has also participated in the youth guide program.
The Kant-Gymnasium has been an open all-day school since the 2007/08 school year . In this context, the morning and afternoon lessons were rhythmicized and free afternoon care was set up (except for lunch) every day of the week until 4 p.m.
