The canton of Cotagaita is a municipality in the Department of Potosí in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
The Cantón Cotagaita is one of seventeen cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Cotagaita in the province of Nor Chichas . It borders in the north with the canton of Vichacla , in the north-west with the canton Río Blanco , in the west with the canton Sagrario , in the south with the province Sur Chichas , in the south-east with the canton Ramadas , the canton Laytapi and the canton Valle Hermoso , in the east to the canton of Carlos Medinacelli and the canton of Mormorque , and in the northeast to the canton of Pampa Grande and the canton of La Carreta .
The canton extends between about 20 ° 41 'and 21 ° 10' south latitude and 65 ° 20 'and 66 ° 00' west longitude, it measures from north to south up to 50 kilometers, from west to east up to 40 kilometers. There are a total of 51 municipalities in the canton, the central place is Cotagaita in the center of the canton with 1,645 inhabitants ( 2001 ). The canton lies at an average altitude of around 3200 m .

The canton of Cotagaita is located in the southern part of the barren plateau of the Bolivian Altiplano . The climate is cool and dry because of the inland location and is characterized by a typical daytime climate, in which the temperature fluctuations between day and night are usually significantly greater than the seasonal fluctuations.
The annual average temperature in the canton's valleys is 15 ° C (see climate diagram Cotagaita) and fluctuates only slightly between 11 ° C in June / July and 18 ° C in December and January. The annual precipitation is only about 300 mm, with a strongly pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 70–80 mm monthly precipitation.
